Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a significant awards ceremony approaches, one notices a demand to include of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles globally and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
