Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
