Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.

While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
